The Lefdal Mine Datacenter (LMD) in Norway opened earlier this May and promises to be the most secure, green, cost-effective, and flexible datacenter in the whole of Europe. Having completed Phase 1 of the datacenter building, the LMD has a cooling capacity of 45 MW and is all set to begin operations. Rittal International, LMD’s technology and strategic partner, has provided its scalable, preconfigured, and modular infrastructure for this project. Chief Executive Officer of Rittal, Dr. Karl-Ulrich Köhler, stated at the opening that the digital transformation that the industry is going through is sure to result in greater capacities of datacenters and will also ensure efficient industrialization of datacenter services and infrastructure. Rittal aims toward intelligent standardization and has been doing so since it was founded in 1961.
Best Features of Lefdal Mine Datacenter
The 120,000 square meters datacenter is situated at the west coast of Norway, runs solely on renewable energy, and uses water from a nearby fjord to cool down. This datacenter has been achieving a power usage effectiveness (PUE) level of less than 1.15 and the energy costs are relatively low. With its unique flexibility in terms of technical solutions and available space, the LMD offers a “pay as you grow” model to customers, avoiding the risk of paying in advance for capacity that is not needed. The structure of the facility works in favor of containers of all sizes and shapes and ensures a rather streamlined solution for issues such as temperature, operational equipment, customized power density, and humidity.
