Cellular technology has rapidly evolved from 2G network to a lightning fast 5G network. It has download speeds 10 to 100 times faster than the 4G network. Additionally, it delivers 1000 times the data delivered by the current networks. 5G network is yet to enter the mainstream market as there are hardly any 5G base stations. However, Shanghai claims to be the first district with both 5G network coverage and a broadband gigabyte network. Wu Qing, Shanghai’s vice mayor made the first 5G video call on Huawei Mate X during the launch ceremony.
Huawei is a Chinese telecom giant and its Huawei Mate X is world’s first foldable 5G, AI phone. Huawei is building 5G stations in Tibet and other parts of China. However, it is facing a lot of opposition from the U.S. U.S. is even pressing other countries to sever ties with Huawei. However, China is protesting against these efforts of the U.S. to extradite Huawei’s CFO, Meng Wanzhou.
Telecom Carrier China Mobile aided trials for 5G Network
China Daily reported that China had started trial runs for 5G network in Shanghai’s Hongkou. The telecom carrier China Mobile supported these trials. Jian Qin, China Mobile’s vice-president said that they invested heavily in Shanghai as it has solid infrastructure. He further said that the city leads in information technology owing to its excellent industrial outlay.
The work for trial began with the installation of 5G base stations to ensure full coverage. Zhang Jianming, deputy director of the Shanghai municipal economic and informatisation commission said that China aims at building more than 30,000 5G base stations by 2021.
An extensive use of 5G network will not only boost the smart city infrastructure but will aid industrial manufacturing. Further, it will aid new developments in the realm of Internet of Things and change the face of cellular technology.
