Robots and AI is the new buzzword globally. Researchers have taken another leap in bringing the robotic future a step closer to us. In a new research, robots learned the ability to recognize human emotions.
This new research relied on a major observation or hypothesis of human behavior. According to the observation, human being are capable of recognizing emotions like sadness, excitement, and aggression based on movements. This is a major discovery as it meant we and robots can recognize these emotions without observing facial expressions.
This study provided robotics the much needed steam or wings to get off grounds. Robotics today is majorly focused on improving efficiency and productivity in repetitive tasks. Furthermore, these tasks present key challenges like job losses. On the other hand, it does not result in anything significantly higher than monetary gains. However, understanding human emotions and responding them to them can be a key to building a new future.

Robotics today continues to make giant leaps in many areas. People at facebook are trying to teach robots human language. And, Facebook is not alone! Google, Amazon, Microsoft are investing giant sums in helping AIs acquire languages naturally. Moreover, many robots are already capable of learning second language.
The new study unveils a larger potential. Earlier, robots learned on automated programming to respond. However, with the understanding of emotions, the algorithms that support robots can go a step beyond. Robots can respond to human emotions in different ways. Furthermore, these can someday help is take an objective look at ourselves. Maybe, one day they will help us build on our imagination.
The study published in the Frontiers in Robotics and AI presents infinite new possibilities. A team of researchers from the Donders Centre for Cognition at Radboud University collaborated to conduct this research. Other major universities like Warwick business school, University of Plymouth were also involved in the study.
