As per a new research from VU’s College of Health and Biomedicine, people who eat yeast-based spreads and vegemite are less stressed and anxious than people who do not eat them. In an online survey conducted by researchers of 520 people in countries such as the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand who eat yeast-based spreads such as Vegemite, promite, and marmite affect the moods of those who regularly consume them as part of their daily diet.

Making use of a depression anxiety stress scale, the survey has shown that people who regularly consumed sticky black spreads had high vitamin B, including B1, B2, B3, B6, B9, and B12 reported to have low stress levels and lower anxiety. Since not all spreads contain the same vitamin B content, consumers who consumed spreads which are fortified with B12 had the lowest stress levels. Fortified B12 is found in both vegemite and marmite.

Yeast-based Spreads Help in Effective Regulation of Nervous System

Late Professor Vasso Apostolopoulos, who was also a lead researcher, said that spreads were used during World War I as an essential ration for the soldiers and also became a household staple. However there has been very little scientific research to substantiate the health claims and prove that they play an active role in reducing stress and anxiety. All we know is that these extracts are some of the best and richest sources of vitamin B and vital for energizing the bodies and also helps in the effective regulation of the nervous system.
